July, 1994

The first place that Julie and I travelled to together was Las Vegas and California. We went with our friend Terry, who (by my last count) has been to Las Vegas about 7 x 1023 times. We stayed at the Excalibur Hotel in Las Vegas. It was the first trip there for both Julie and myself. After touching down at the McCarran Airport, I saw Jeff Bridges in the bathroom (I won't elaborate about this little anecdote, in case you're eating right now). curtis Little did we know that the day we arrived was also the christening of the new Planet Hollywood in Vegas. Later that evening, we parked ourselves outside the restaurant, pathetically hoping to get a glimpse of celebrity. In fact, we did see a few celebrities. Sylvester Stallone ran past me at Caesar's Palace (he's shorter than me... ha-ha!). We also saw Stallone's mom, Tony Curtis, and James Belushi. Although neither of us really gambles, we both had a blast in Las Vegas. The one thing I remember is the wall of heat that enveloped us the second we stepped out of the airport terminal. Since we've been there, there have been a number of new hotels that have gone up. We'd like to go back and see the new hotels sometime soon.

We also took a side trip to California during our trip to Las Vegas. We rented a Nissan Maxima and hit the highway. The first day in California, we took in a taping of The Tonight Show with Jay Leno. The guests that day included William Shatner (I think he's most famous for "Tekwar"). Jay Leno seemed like a genuinely nice person. To enter The Tonight Show studios, we had to go through more security and metal detectors than at a Turkish airport. The next day, we went to Disneyland. To this day, Julie hasn't forgiven me for wanting to leave before the nightly fireworks display. Disneyland is too big to see in its entirety in one day. Alas, that's all the time that we had allotted for Disneyland.

We met Mickey!
